What to expect in the Windows 10 Spring Creator’s Update

Posted on 9 April 2018 by Duncan McClean.

The Spring Creators update is nearly here. In this article, I will tell you about the new features that are being added.

Windows 10 was first released in July of 2015. Since then there have been a number of feature updates(as Microsoft like to call them) which add new features to Windows 10. They are released twice a year. Usually in March/April and in September/October. It’s almost like an entirely new operating system.

Timeline

The big feature in the Spring Creators update is the Timeline. The timeline is part of the Task View feature(the button beside Cortana on the taskbar) and will let you see not only the windows you have open but also what you have had open in the last 30 days, across all your devices as long as you are using the same Microsoft account.

Fluent design

Parts of Windows 10 will look a little bit different. Microsoft has implemented ‘Fluent design’, it’s kind of like the areo design in Windows 7.

The biggest example of Fluent design in the Update is in the Settings app.

Sound Controls moved to Settings

Sound Controls have been moved away from the old Control Panel into the Settings app.

Startup moved to Settings

Another thing that has been moved to Settings is the Startup settings. They used to live in the Task Manager.

Set upload and download limits

Now you can set upload and download limits for updates. This feature will be helpful if you have a set broadband limit, so you can make sure not too much of your monthly allowance is taken up by forced Windows updates.

Password recovery

If you forget your password to your user account, you can now reset it!

You’ve been able to do this with your Microsoft account for a while but now the feature has been introduced for Local accounts.
